In this article, we will unpack and debunk the misleading claims that have increasingly been used as talking points or even rhetorical weapons by the anti-LGBTQ+ activists or those seeking to discredit transgender healthcare.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-myth-gender-affirming-care-is-new-and-experimental\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth: Gender-affirming care is new and experimental.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reality:<\/strong> Gender-affirming care is not new and is <em>not<\/em> a trend. It has by far been around for over a century, dating back to 1919, when physician <em>Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld<\/em> opened the <em>Institute for Sexual Science<\/em> in Berlin. Along with other physicians, he conducted the first formal studies and treatment of gender dysphoria in Germany. In the 1940s, <em>Michael Dillon<\/em> became the first transgender man to undergo phalloplasty for the purpose of gender affirmation. In the 1950s, <em>Christine Jorgensen<\/em> was the first American transgender woman to attain fame for having gender-affirming surgery. In 1966, <em>John Hopkins University<\/em> opened the first gender identity clinic in the U.S, which provided comprehensive care for transgender individuals, including counseling, hormone therapy, and gender-affirming procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-myth-hrt-will-change-your-personality-testosterone-will-make-you-aggressive-and-violent-and-estrogen-will-make-you-hysterical\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth: HRT will change your personality; testosterone will make you aggressive and violent, and estrogen will make you hysterical.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reality:<\/strong> While hormonal fluctuations may provoke changes in one\u2019s emotional landscape, taking testosterone or estrogen does not inevitably cause someone to become emotionally \u201cout of control\u201d. This idea is primarily rooted in sexist tropes and stereotypes, suggesting that masculinity is \u201cinnately violent\u201d, while femininity is \u201cemotionally unhinged\u201d. It is easier to reduce certain behaviours down to biology rather than unpacking the more complex reasons behind them, and most people tend to believe in this correlation to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case of transgender people, research studies have consistently shown that gender-affirming hormones are capable of improving mood and mental health by reducing feelings of gender dysphoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-myth-hrt-will-automatically-make-you-infertile\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth: HRT will automatically make you infertile.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reality:<\/strong> One common misconception about HRT is that it inevitably causes permanent infertility. While HRT significantly affects reproductive function (suppression of sperm production in trans women, suppression of menstruation and ovulation in trans men), the relationship between hormones and fertility is better understood as a complex and individual process, which includes other factors like age, hormone dosage, the length of treatment, and previous medical conditions. It is important to keep in mind that HRT is <em>not<\/em> a method of birth control, and it\u2019s still possible to conceive or make somebody pregnant while taking hormones, even if chances are significantly lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While once thought to cause permanent infertility, modern studies suggest that recovery can be possible within months to a few years after stopping HRT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-myth-hrt-will-outright-give-you-cancer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth: HRT will outright give you cancer.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reality:<\/strong> HRT can slightly increase the risks of some cancers, particularly those involving tissues that respond to sex hormones (Ex. Trans women\/transfeminine people have a higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to cis men due to breast tissue growth). However, there is no sufficient data available on long-term effects of HRT, including cancer, due to a lack of broader investment into transgender healthcare. Currently, there is no defined evidence demonstrating an increased risk that is inherently linked with HRT itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor health outcomes linked with HRT are more commonly associated with a lack of access to adequate healthcare and delayed routine screenings. Therefore, it is advised for individuals undergoing HRT to keep up with routine cancer screening protocols, as it is advised for cisgender people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-myth-people-rush-into-transitioning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth: People rush into transitioning.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reality:<\/strong> In the mind of an average transphobe, the process of accessing HRT usually looks like this: A person decides they want hormones, goes to see a doctor, and instantly gets a prescription. In reality, before starting their HRT journey, people seeking it are often subjected to a lengthy process of medical and psychological evaluations. Healthcare professionals will discuss gender-affirming goals, medical history, possible risks and benefits, fertility considerations, and what changes are likely to be expected. The exact process varies depending on the country, healthcare system, and individual circumstances. Some individuals spend multiple years on lengthy waiting lists before gaining access to appropriate services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear acts as a significant barrier, potentially causing those seeking medical transition to keep putting off their plans or abandon them altogether.
