Reasons include safety concerns, discrimination and stigma, social rejection, and the emotional weight of managing cisgender people\u2019s reactions and level of education on the topic.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality shows that many cisgender people, even if they aren\u2019t inherently opposed to trans\/non-binary people, or are themselves part of the LGBTQ+ community, may still lack proper understanding of transgender and non-binary people\u2019s experiences. This does not necessarily stem from intentional prejudice. Rather, people who have never experienced a disconnect between their gender identity and birth assigned sex may find it difficult to fully understand the social, personal, and emotional nuances that accompany trans and non-binary people\u2019s daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-coming-out-vs-being-stealth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coming out vs. being stealth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cDo I come out right away, or later? Do I come out at all?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For gender-diverse people, the process of building new relationships often comes with extra steps. What might be a simple introduction for a cisgender person, often requires profound consideration for somebody under the trans umbrella. Before allowing someone to get to know them more closely, a gender-diverse person often has to weigh the risks of how their identity might be received. While it is possible to ask directly, this may not always be a safe option. That leaves the trans-identified individual to rely on subtle cues, such as the way the other person talks about transgender people, or the way they react when the topic is mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-right-time-to-come-out\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The \u201cright\u201d time to come out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no universally \u201cright\u201d time to come out, as the decision is deeply subjective and personal. Some gender-diverse people choose to disclose their identity early, while others choose to wait until they feel comfortable enough about sharing something so personal. Some may never disclose their gender identity to certain people at all. There are multiple factors that influence that decision, such as level of safety, past experiences, or even how relevant one\u2019s gender identity is to the particular relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cEveryone\u2019s situation is unique. I know that some transgender people who pass as cis choose to remain stealth, which is fine. Some choose to be more open about their identity. For me, given I do not pass (neither do I intend to), whether I disclose my identity or not depends on the situation. Within the LGBTQ+ community, I usually inform people about my identity and pronouns right from the get-go. In other cases, I either wait before opening up or don\u2019t do it at all. Personally, I do not care that much whether strangers or basic acquaintances get my name\/pronouns right, as they do not play that big of a role in my life. With potential friends, however, it\u2019s different. I usually wait and learn about their attitude towards gender-diverse people before making the choice of disclosing my identity.\u201d \u2013 Luci, genderqueer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coming out early may provide the feeling of honesty and relief. However, it also comes with the risk of potential rejection before anything meaningful gets the chance to form. In the meantime, coming out later makes room for establishing trust first, yet in case of a negative response that trust ends up feeling like it wasn\u2019t genuine. There is also the possibility that disclosure will change the dynamic of an otherwise comfortable relationship, with a sudden change of attitude or the focus being shifted on one\u2019s gender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Paying excessive attention to one\u2019s gender identity comes with a whole range of negative effects, including:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>making the person feel as if their gender identity matters more than their personality, hobbies, and interests;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>implying that gender-diverse people are meant to be treated differently from cisgender people, that they require \u201cspecial\u201d or \u201cunique\u201d treatment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pushing one\u2019s personal boundaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-make-it-easier\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to make it easier?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to make a trans\/non-binary person feel comfortable and secure while establishing new connections is to have a <strong>casual<\/strong> approach to their gender identity. An exaggerated, shocked, or (even positively!) surprised reaction may trigger feelings of exposure and\/or vulnerability. Gender identities aren\u2019t a major, grandiose event, but a simple fact about somebody that needs to be respected.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Navigating friendships and relationships poses a distinct challenge for many gender-diverse people.
